River Birch

River Birch (Betula nigra)
is a native birch of the river bottoms. It is particularly suited
to sites that are wet in spring but may be dry in summer and fall.
It's pendulous catkins are one of the first harbingers of spring.
With it's outstanding tan peeling bark and clear yellow autumn color,
it truly is a four-season tree!
River birch makes an impressive specimen
and commonly grows as a clump of several trunks. It is a fast grower
in full sun to a height of 40' and width of 30'.
