Basic
Fertilizing
At Planting
This is a critical
time for the plant. A good quality “root stimulator” fertilizer for
new planting should be utilized. The numbers on the bag refer to the
amount of Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium (K) composing the fertilizer.
As
with any product, reading the label is a must. Each package will explain
the proper amount to use and how it should be applied. A thorough watering
is also then recommended.
Established
Shrubs and Trees
Incorporate
fertilizer into soil surface. Feeding should be done spring into early
summer and/or mid to late fall. Mid to late summer feeding should be
avoided. This can encourage new growth that would be unable to prepare
for winter.
Again, follow
each products’ label instructions. Some recommend application once a
season; some once a week. The proper amount is what you need. Too much
fertilizer is quite harmful to the plants. We recommend Fertilome Tree
& Shrub Food or Most 12-12-12
Perennials
Use a “root stimulator” when
planting new perennials. For established plantings apply a light application
of slow release fertilizer in spring and as needed throughout the summer
as indicated by plant growth and color. Do not over-fertilize, or you
will stimulate production of foliage, with a decrease in flowering.
Do not fertilize after August 1.
Annuals,
Vegetables and Herbs
High Nitrogen
and Phosphorus fertilizers such as Miracle Grow promote blooming and
fruiting for these short season plants. Be careful to choose the proper
fertilizer for your plant, i.e. Miracle Grow for Tomatoes etc. Follow
directions.
