Fall is a great time
to rejuvenate your yard and garden.
- Plant pansies,
kale, flowering cabbages and ornamental grasses for fall color.
- Fall is the
perfect planting season for trees and shrubs giving plants two seasons
of root growth before next summer’s heat.
- Keep watering
newly planted nursery stock until the ground freezes.
- Fertilize your
lawn in September with Scott's Step 4 Fall Fertilizer and again in
November with Scott's Step 5 Premium Winterizer.
- Winterize big
leaf hydrangeas after leaf drop by mounding soil to cover the lower
2-3 buds on each stem.
- Fertilize trees
and shrubs in November after leaf drop when they have gone dormant.
- Protect grafted
roses over winter with a mound of soil 10-12” deep. Do not apply until
ground is near freezing.
- Clean up fallen
plant debris to reduce over-wintering disease and insects.
- Plant spring-flowering
bulbs beginning in late September until ground is frozen. Wait to
plant tulips until late-October to prevent early sprouting.
- Cut back dead
foliage on your perennials after a hard frost. Leave coneflowers,
sedums and ornamental grasses for winter interest.
- Perennials with
woody stems such as Buddleia, Caryopteris, Lavender and Russian Sage
should not be cut back until spring.
- Give your houseplants
that were moved outside for the summer a shower to remove insects.
Gradually reduce light and move back indoors before night temperatures
drop below 55 Degrees.
