Winter
Containers with Fresh Greens
Keep your outdoor
winter containers full and beautiful by "planting" an arrangement of
fresh greens and berries. Fresh greens make a good alternative to a
potted tree or shrub. Trees and shrubs in above ground containers have
only a 50% chance of survival in our zone 5A winters.
Pack your containers
with a heavy soil mix and wet the soil well. Select an assortment of
fresh greens and berries from Allisonville Nursery and your own garden.
Make a fresh cut on the bottom of the stems and stick in a bucket of
water for an hour. This allows the greens a chance to get hydrated before
planting. "Plant" your greens by pushing the stems down into the soil
in your container.
Great fresh
greens for winter containers include fraser fir, noble fir, white pine,
juniper, western red cedar, boxwood, winterberry holly, and coned cedar.
Try adding stems of red twig dogwood, crabapples and hawthornes for
a splash of color. Add a bright bow and you're ready for the holidays.
Depending on the weather, these
arrangements will often last until the first spring thaw!
