Lawn
Care for the Midwest
Maintenance
Calendar
Mid
to Late March. Use a *pre-emergent weed killer.
*Do not use a pre-emergent if you are planning to reseed your lawn.
Early
April. If you have actively growing perennial weeds, you may spray them
with a liquid weed killer. We recommend using a hose end sprayer for
ease of application, or use a granular broadleaf week killer or a granular
weed and feed.
Late
May. Fertilize you lawn with a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer..
July. Apply
Grub Control if necessary
Late
September. Apply fall lawn fertilizer high in phosphorus - lower in
nitrogen.
Late
October to Late November. Winterize your lawn by applying a fast release
nitrogen fertilizer and apply after the final mowing. Get it ready to
face the severe conditions winter may bring.
Watering
and Mowing
By properly
watering your yard, you will avoid many pests and diseases.
Provide
one inch of water one time per week. Under severe heat conditions, water
1 inch of water two times weekly (see tips & tricks.)
During
the hot summer months mow your lawn 3” high. Scalping the lawn will
encourage pests and cause scalding.
Most
diseases and fungus can be avoided by proper watering. Treat diseases
by identifying the disease (we will be happy to help), and using the
proper product according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
