On
the Cutting Edge
No one
has ever said that horticulture is on the cutting edge, but horticulturally
speaking, we are in exciting times.
New plant varieties are introduced every year, but the
sheer number of them now available is mind boggling. Plant propagators
the world over are developing plants that are more in line with our
homes and life style than ever before. Compact
plants that are easier to maintain and use as lot sizes
decrease are coming to stores by the truckload. Color
is everywhere. Flowers used to have it all, but now
they must share the spotlight. Foliage that was once only green is now
dark crimson, gold, or variegations of all type. Stems and berries that
were often, “just for the birds,” are so bright that they
will light up the dreariest of Hoosier winters.
Over the course of the next year I will be introducing some of the new
stars in the landscape and what new varieties you might soon see, as
I wait for them to become publicly available.

‘Rudy Haag’ —
a true dwarf selection of burning bush that only grows to a height of
3-4 ft. and has the traditional, consistent red fall color. This plant
is a winner.
Tor’
Spirea — a compact spirea reaching a height of
3 ft. Its white flower clusters are set against a backdrop of deep green
leaves that are almost iridescent in the summer, turning a deep, purplish-red
in the fall.

‘Endless Summer’ — the first big-leaf
hydrangea that blooms on both old and new wood for repeat blooms all
season long. Its large flower heads will bloom pink or blue depending
on soil alkalinity. At 3-5 ft. in height and width, it is an ideal shrub
for foundation or perennial borders.
Until
next time!
