General
Care
Light
Pansies prefer
a partial shade location with protection from sun during the heat of
the day.
Soil
Pansies grow best in rich, moist, well-drained soil high
in organic matter. Add peat or composted manure to enrich your soil.
Temperature
Pansies will develop best when night temperatures are
in the 40’s and day temperatures are in the 60 degree range. They are
extremely cold hardy though, and can survive temperatures as low as
10 degrees if properly hardened.
Fertilizer
When planting, water in with
root stimulator fertilizer. Pansies are heavier than normal feeders.
Follow-up every 3-4 weeks with supplemental light feedings of 5-10-5
or a pansy fertilizer.
Bloom Keep
old flowers pinched off to force more blossoms. Pansies will slow down
in hot temperatures. Pinch back, keep well-watered, mulch to keep roots
cool and wait for a repeat show in fall.
Pansy Partners
Spring
Combine pansies with primroses,
late blooming bulbs and early vegetables such as frilly red lettuce
and cabbage.
Fall
Combine pansies with ornamental cabbage, kale, mums, and ornamental
grasses.
