Planting Instructions
Trees
and Shrubs – Balled and Burlapped
Prepare
a planting hole 4-6 inches wider than the root ball. Dig just deep
enough so the top of the root ball is 1-2” above ground level
AFTER planting. Evergreen trees should be approx. 2-3” above
the ground level AFTER planting. Planting slightly above ground level
helps ensure better drainage in our Indiana heavy clay soil.
We
DO NOT recommend the removal of the wire basket. It functions as the
support for the root system and is important to the success of your
planting. We DO recommend that the burlap and twine be removed from
around the crown of the plant AFTER the plant has been settled completely
in the planting hole. Bend back wire loops of basket. Fill the hole
with the ORIGINAL SOIL and water deeply. DO NOT PLACE SOIL on top
of the root ball.
Spread
a 3” layer of shredded hardwood mulch on and around the planting.
NEVER let the mulch touch the trunk of a tree. We recommend staking
for 1 full year. Fertilization the first season is not necessary.
Regular watering is vital to the plant's establishment.
Trees
and Shrubs - Container Plants
Prepare a planting hole 4-6 inches wider than the diameter
of the container.
Remove the plastic container! Loosen the roots slightly if matted.
Set the plant at the same level it was growing in the container. Back
fill the hole with the original soil
Water in well.
Mulch with a 2-3” layer of shredded hardwood mulch avoiding
the
trunk area.
