Spring
is a great time to evaluate the condition of your yard and garden.
The following is a “print and save list” of springtime chores.
- Prune young
specimen trees before they leaf out. Remove damaged and crossing branches
or limbs. Pruning encourages a strong central leader branch and an
attractively shaped tree.
- Hand-pick and
destroy over- wintering bagworm cases on trees and evergreens.
-
In
mid to late March, apply lawn fertilizer with pre-emergent crabgrass
control. DO NOT apply if you plan to re-seed your lawn.
-
Apply
horticultural/dormant oil spray to control scale insects and mites
on landscape plants following package directions. Recommended especially
for euonymus, mugo pine, and dwarf alberta spruce.
- Apply PREEN
to shrub beds now and again in June for a weed-free year.
- Prune spring
flowering shrubs AFTER blooming: azaleas, forsythia, rhododendrons,
etc.
-
Prepare
flower beds. Till soil and remove dead plant material, including
winter mulch. Add aged manure or compost to keep beds healthy. Spread
a layer of new mulch and divide perennials.
-
Plant
new perennials before summer heat begins.
-
Establish
new annual beds after last frost (around May 10th).
- Cut back ornamental
grasses to 6”
- Make sure all
danger of frost is over before moving potted plants back outdoors.
